...... City Life II: Hong Kong & Beyond On 20 May 2003, three days before the World Health Organisation lifted its advice against travel to Hong Kong, we talked about doing something to help our city move beyond its traumatic SARS experience. Applications were sent to public venues on 30 May. Art, we hope, will rehabitate our city. As a result, an exhibition of photographs by Hark Yeung and paintings by Fong So was staged in July/August 2003 in two public venues. ......
Our Elders It is not easy to write about the uneasy relationship between two generations. This book, which would not exist without the help and support of my friends, has made me understand more about my parents and myself. I thought of writing this book after reading some of the notes written over the past two years by Fong So, my partner and companion. In his notes, he also wrote about his relationship with his parents and even about how difficult it was to have a relationship with a woman like me.... ......
City Life: Paintings by Fong So(exhibition catalogue) University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, 2000. In 1999, I started to use traditional Chinese painting media, mainly ink and Chinese Xuan paper, to depict present-day city life. After seeing more and more local art exhibitions, I found that people and city life had rarely been the concern of those painters using Chinese media. Shortly after I started to paint city life, a friend paid me a visit in my small apartment, where I had turned the living room into my studio. Looking at the almost finished painting of an old woman collecting scraps, she said, "that's not a Chinese painting." I asked what she expected to see in a Chinese painting. Her answer was: "Flowers, birds on the branch, or a beautiful landscape." ...
